Urban Sociology-Roseland Mental Health Clinic Halted from Closing

Medill Reports Chicago entered a news report on Mayor Daley. Mayor Daley is on the right track. He has helped halt the closing of Mental Health clinics in the South Side. Roseland Mental Health Center was on the verge of closing and Mayor Richard Daley intervened, and stop the closing.

The four community mental health clinics were expected to close by Wednesday, leaving only eight facilities for patients to seek treatment. Currently, there is only enough funding for approximately seven or eight mental health teams out of 12, according to Hadac.

“Previously at each of the 12 clinics, there was simply not enough professional staff and support staff to serve patients effectively,” he said. “And frankly, that’s a disservice to the people who need service.”

Patients at the four clinics have been notified of the consolidation and made aware of other treatment options. Possibilities included choosing another community mental health clinic or private provider.

It is about time that the state starts helping with some of the mental health issues in Chicago.

Urban Sociology-Mental Health in Pilsen

I received a call today from a prior student who's brother has schizophrenia. Sadly enough this patient was not given the proper dosage by a resident in a Pilsen Health Center run by the city. The patient was given new medication without any label on the meds. The patient was in an automobile accident. Now the patient is being charged for murder due to his accident. Sadly, he was in the Maywood Park Police station held without medication for 3 days. He was suicidal, and without meds. Sounds to me like this may be a malpractice. Finally, the patient was released and taken to Rush Hospital for an evaluation. He was given very high dosages of medication due to his condition. Cases like these are dealt with in our hospitals in the emergency rooms. Families are force to bring in their family members because of lack of mental health care in Pilsen.

If, this patient had been treated, he would have been stabilized and probably not been in an accident. Because of that he has created suffering and pain for the family who now does not have a family member. Also, for his family that now has to deal with running around seeking legal aid, and trying to find a Psychiatrist that will evaluate him.

Urban Sociology - Mental Health Services in Pilsen

My paper is based on Latinos and Mental Health services.
I have reviewed the extent in which related concerns about mental health care account for the under use of mental health services among low-income Latinos in Pilsen. Low-income immigrant Latinos who were screened for depression in county entitlement services were asked about barriers on Mental Health care or related services. I studied barriers to accessing mental health care and the quality of this care.
Zayas (2008) states that: “There is a combination of forces that come together as Latinas integrate themselves more into the American social experience.” Such forces include cultural clashes where the Latinas are expected to live in accordance with the strict traditional values of their parents. While, they are living in a contemporary American society, that allows greater liberties to young girls. Latino immigrant adolescents are experiencing: family pressures to help around the house; conflicts within families, especially with their mothers, and the experience of uncertainties about their racial and ethnic identity which create a sense of isolation.

Urban Sociology-Community Building-Chicago-Organization

Community building to me is organizing a network of people to communicate. We usually have a block party in the summer and we get to know the neighbors in the block. We have a block yard rummage sale, and that also give us a chance to meet some of our neighbors. Community building is organizing events to have your neighbors participate in. We have some older folks that do not participate, and lock themselves in their houses. That is their choice, sometimes we have told them that as citizens of the city we would like to check on them, but they prefer to isolate themselves. We also have a some Polish speaking folks, that cannot communicate in English.

In the following article, By Sandy O'Donnell and Ellen Schumer they discuss some of the community building. O'Donnell and Schumer examine the problem of organizing, or lack thereof, in housing and community development. Sandy last year led a team that evaluated the Woods Fund of Chicago's Community Organizing grants making program. The team interviewed dozens of organizers, funders, community development professionals, and community leaders. Ellen has 20 years of community and political organizing experience and is currently director of a project, Community Organizing and Family Issues (COFI), (co-founded by Sandy and Ellen) that seeks to develop leadership to make low-income communities more family supportive. This emerging model in community organizing, the authors contend, holds great promise in developing low-income communities.

In each community you will find someone who takes the lead whether it is one person or a group. Sometimes, neigborhoods with problems, like gang or drug problems come together because of their issues.

Urban Sociology-Classmate's blog

I reviewed Khadijeh Talebzadeh blog her thoughts on 2016 Chicago Olympics, were well written and interesting. I loved her picture that seemed to be the Eiffel Tower, but I did not see anything saying it was the Eiffel Tower.
Her discussion and reflection of uncool cities was good. She did a great job of discussing her reflection of New Orleans and why it was not a cool city. She discusses resources that could make the city of New Orleans cool.
She also did an excellent job of discussing eminent domain. I think she could have added some pictures. She discussed the city of Chicago in several of her entries.
In comparison to my blog I thought her discussions were good, but lack pictures. She did a good job overall.

Panama hats-Puerto Rican clip

A short video is illustrated on the Panama hats that are warned by many Puerto Rican men and some females in Latin America. These hats are very nice and can protect you from the sun. The video discuss the organic material they are made of. I like the video because of the scenes in Puerto Rico and the Panama canal. It also shows videos of San Juan, Puerto Rico, enjoy. The gentleman in the story tells a story of how the hats were created and the material of the hats.
