Urban Sociology - Mental Health Services in Pilsen

My paper is based on Latinos and Mental Health services.
I have reviewed the extent in which related concerns about mental health care account for the under use of mental health services among low-income Latinos in Pilsen. Low-income immigrant Latinos who were screened for depression in county entitlement services were asked about barriers on Mental Health care or related services. I studied barriers to accessing mental health care and the quality of this care.
Zayas (2008) states that: “There is a combination of forces that come together as Latinas integrate themselves more into the American social experience.” Such forces include cultural clashes where the Latinas are expected to live in accordance with the strict traditional values of their parents. While, they are living in a contemporary American society, that allows greater liberties to young girls. Latino immigrant adolescents are experiencing: family pressures to help around the house; conflicts within families, especially with their mothers, and the experience of uncertainties about their racial and ethnic identity which create a sense of isolation.
