Uncool Cities
By Joe Kotkin’s
The article discuss that the key to urban success lies in attracting such groups of twenty something, singles, artists and homosexuals. The population mostly middle class will have businesses, financial services and technology employment, which bring money into the city. They even mention bringing in the forty year old adults, particularly if they have children. In which, most folks who have families will end up going to the suburbs.
He mentioned that having fun activities, parks, jazz clubs, gay bars, art museums, luxury hotels and condos are long term prospects of the middle class. I truly believe this brings in more young middle class, would you want to live in a city that has no activities, or transportation? The youth of today do not want to visit a city that has no activities, no bars or clubs to visit. The young and mid 40 year olds enjoy the nightclubs, coffee shops and galleries nationwide.
Houston is a city that has taken the lead in the high-paid service jobs connected to trade, such as finance, engineering and medical services. Cities like Detroit, Baltimore, and New Orleans lack tourism and culture. They are declining and have much more crime and need public safety. The “coolness,” strategy as Joel Kotkin, refers to cities that are increasing in population cost money and require schools and transportation that works.
