Urban Sociology--#5, Article 18

Jane Jacobs was a wonderful radical legacy to the city of New York. She paved the way for “advocacy planning.” She fought for the low income poor people so that they would not be displaced. She self taught her self to change the way we think about liveable cities. She organized groups and educated them on urban planning, so, that they would not create highways, luxury housing, expansion of institutions. The article by Peter Dreier in Article 18, spoke about how she described good cities, which were untidy, with walking, biking and transit over cars.
Ald. Suarez, an Alderman in the Northwest side of Chicago has also fought urban issues for the poor to have better housing. He helped with senior citizen housing areas. He is helping the Belmont Cragin area with issues of rental and organizing parents for the expansion of Mozart School. He has fought for tenant rights and rent control. He meets with the citizens so that they can create a city that fights against violence and crime. He has provided referrals to loan companies for help to citizens losing their homes.
